THE RHYTHM AUTHORITY

2007 Interview with BXF bassist:

Dan Carlisle

by Kay Starr

TRF:WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING?

DC:I started playing the bass when I was 13 years old. I played the trumpet
before that and decided it wasn't as cool.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:WHY THE BASS?

DC:Tome there's no limit to what you can do on a bass. There are guys that
lay out extremely fat and heavy notes that shake you, and then there are guys
that tear up and down the neck faster than some lead guitar players. What's
cooler than that? It's also a great responsibility being one half of the rhythm
section.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?

DC:James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius, Cliff Burton, Alvin Moody . . .
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST GIG AND HOW DID IT GO?

DC: my first gig was with a metal band at some small teen center. It was
pretty funny. We didn't sound that great but we had fun. It's a good thing some
of the other bands were playing their first show as well.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:DO YOU PLAY ANY OTHER INSTRUMENTS?

DC:Yes. I play guitar and piano as well
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:HAVE YOU EVER HAD ANYTHING EMBARASSING HAPPEN TO YOU
ON STAGE?

DC:Yup. I spilled beer all over my gear and the stage during a show. My
fingers were sticking to my stings and my feet were sticking to the floor. It
was awesome.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:TELL US ABOUT YOUR BAND:

DC:Everyone adds their own unique style and personality to the band. Jesse's
a great motivator with a lot of energy. Danny can be soft-spoken at times but
his playing speaks for itself. Ben has an intensity in his playing that's so
entertaining to watch and listen to that sometimes I need to remember to play
my part. Usually what happens onstage, is Ben makes fun of Jesse and then
Jesse takes it out on Danny while I laugh. Oh and we sound alright too.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:DESCRIBE EACH OF YOUR BANDMATES USING ONE WORD:

DC:Jesse- Loud

Ben- Uninhibited

Danny- Meticulous
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WISH YOU WOULD OF DONE BY THIS
TIME IN YOUR LIFE MUSICALLY, ANY REGRETS?

DC:Nope. No regrets. I feel like Im right where Im supposed to be. I am
constantly learning new things and doing what I love.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:HOW MANY BASS DO YOU HAVE AND WHATS YOUR FAVORITE TO
PLAY!
DC:Right now I have five. My favorite is my new one. Its a Pedula Thunderbolt
and I cant put it down.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE A SYLE OF PLAYING IF SO WHAT
WOULD YOU CALL IT OR HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT?

DC:It's hard to say. I play so many different kinds of music. Some stuff I'm
really digging in and working for notes, and in other pieces I'll play soft.
Sometimes I play a lot of notes, and other times, I have to hold a simple groove
and lay back. I'm constantly learning new things and progressing.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:IS THERE ANY ONE WHO YOU WOULD ATTRIBUTE TO THE
SUCCESS YOU HAVE HAD SO FAR WITH YOUR MUSIC?

DC:My Father has always been very supportive of my career in music. I can
always learn something from him because he's a musician. He pushes me and
critiques me. Without him I would not be at the level of playing that I am
currently at. He's a great role model.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:WHAT INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?
My family and friends, really good songwriting, and really good music in
general. I'm also a big nature geek and I find a lot of inspiration in the world
around me.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD DO WITH YOUR TIME IF YOU
WERENT A MUSICIAN?

DC:Well I like animals so i could be a veterinarian, but I'm quite lazy so I'd
probably end up living in my parents basement watching Star Trek. (I don't
really watch Star Trek)_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
TRF:WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?

DC:Lotsof stuff. Bob Marley, My Morning Jacket, The Ramones, Bob Dylan,
Ryan Adams, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Martin Sexton, GNR, Bjork, blah
blah blah...
